Wellness Wednesday - Let's Get Outside!

The Midwest is finally thawing out, and you know what that means—time to get outside! After months of bundling up against the cold, we can finally roll down the windows, feel the sun on our skin, and embrace the fresh air. Whether it’s a leisurely stroll, a scenic hike, a family picnic, or just cruising with no destination in mind, getting outside is one of the best things we can do for both our minds and bodies.

Boost Your Mood, One Breath at a Time

Ever noticed how stepping outside instantly makes you feel lighter? That’s because nature has an incredible ability to reduce stress, ease anxiety, and elevate our mood. Studies show that exposure to green spaces can lower cortisol levels (our primary stress hormone) and increase serotonin, the feel-good neurotransmitter. Simply put, nature is like a free therapy session—just without the couch!

Heart Health & the Great Outdoors

If your heart could talk, it would thank you for every step you take outside. Walking, hiking, and even just breathing in fresh air can improve cardiovascular health. Movement helps lower blood pressure, boost circulation, and increase endurance over time. Plus, getting natural sunlight helps regulate your circadian rhythm and supports vitamin D production, which plays a role in heart health.

Walk & Talk: The Secret to Conversation

Have you ever gone for a walk with a quiet kid, only to have them suddenly spill their entire life story? There’s something about movement and fresh air that makes people open up. Maybe it’s the lack of eye contact, maybe it’s the rhythmic motion—but if you’re ready to listen, be prepared for a flood of stories, random thoughts, and maybe even a few deep secrets. (Side note: Parents, this is your golden opportunity!)

Get Outside & Enjoy the Ride

One of my favorite ways to enjoy the improving weather is simply getting in the car, rolling the windows down, getting all the sunshine I can have, and driving without any destination. It clears my mind, puts me in a better mood... until I have to stop for gas. I am also learning to stroll. I've been told I am a fast walker, and lately I am seeing that taking a stroll can be beneficial for my mental health and wellbeing. We don't have to rush everywhere. Take some time to stop and smell the roses ☺️.

What about you? What’s your favorite thing to do outside when the weather is just right? Drop a comment below—I’d love to hear your thoughts!

  1. I enjoy the outdoors. It is a time for me to prepare my flower beds and fill them with beautiful flowers of all shapes, sizes and colors. This is how I incorporate calmness and serenity into my life after a stressful day and/or week at work.

  2. I love walks, better when walking with someone, with a reward at the end. Walking to grab a meal or a drink from a coffee shop, is one of the most refreshing activities to ease the stress of the day. I am very excited for the sun to come back out, consistently!

  3. This is a great blog, I am so thrilled I ran across this. All of the things you mentioned can be taken for granted. For the entire year of 2024 I had a breast cancer battle. I fought and I am a survivor. I inhale/exhale with a purpose. Just sitting still and meditating is essential. I am looking forward to the warm weather.
